On Friday evening I went to my first Melbourne Writer's Festival event for 2010 - Joss Whedon keynote. It wasn't so much a keynote as a question and answer session. I have made no secret about my Buffy fandom and it was a real thrill for me to see Joss in real life.

He was witty, funny and articulate about his career and why he writes. He are some of my tweets from the night:

#mwf #buffy Willow got sexier, Giles got hipper, Anya got weirder, Zander got wider #actorsinfluencingscripts #josswhedon

Buffy community built itself around the show became bigger than the show #josswhedon #internet

#mwf 1. be writing 2. need to write #josswhedon 3. make it yourself
The first tweet relates to Joss talking about how wonderful the cast of Buffy were and how they started having a huge affect on the scripts. He found himself writing not only for the character but for the actors. Joss also respects his fans and acknowledges that without them the shows wouldn't have such a cult following.

He also talked about the way he approaches writing:
  1. Write, write, write
  2. It is not good enough to say I am thinking about writing something. If you are a writer you need to write
  3. If you can't get studio support or funding make it yourself. Joss and his partner made Dr Horrible and funded it themselves.

Joss's first love is making films. There probably wont be another series for a while. He is over the moon about The Avengers and so excited to be making a "comic book" movie. He didn't seem to keen on deconstructing the genre (like Watchmen or Kickass) but more a fan of making the best comic book movie ever. He spoke highly of both Spiderman and Iron Man.

One of the best questions from the floor was: if you could have written or directed something on another series what would it be? He said he came close to writing and directing an episode of Battlestar Galactica.

I now need to watch the following:

  • Dr Horrible's sing-along blog
  • Firefly
  • Dollshouse - I watch a few episodes and didn't really like it but I will give it another go
  • Battlestar Galactica

A great way to kick off MWF. I took along Spluffy with the hope of giving them to him but the opportunity did not arise so they are coming with me to Brisbane as a gift.
